As Luke’s gospel unfolds, it is a dark day. It is dark both politically and spiritually. Herod, a tyrant, is ruler over Palestine; he is a monster of cruelty.  Israel, who should’ve known the heights of liberty, is enslaved to Rome. Spiritually, Israel has backslidden to a man-centered externalism.  External rules and rituals constitute spirituality.
