REJOICING OVER REPENTANCE

I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. – Luke 15:7

You know, there is no greater loss than that of an eternal soul, no cost too great to save that eternal soul, and no joy so great as the salvation of an eternal soul. There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents! Now, don’t let the liberal theologians, the liberal pastors, and the liberal secular progressives pervert the word of God. He is not rejoicing over sinners. There is more joy “over one sinner who repents.” They seem to leave that out, don’t they? We grow weary of the perverting and marring of the holiness of our Savior when they tell us that Jesus would favor and welcome a sinful lifestyle and rejoice over this wickedness or that ungodliness because He welcomes everybody. No, they are perverting the word of God!

There is rejoicing over a sinner who repents, not the sin in the sinner. He can’t rejoice over that because He’s holy. He can rejoice over His capacity in holy justice to convert that sinner and make him holy, but He does not rejoice in that sinner’s wickedness. Jesus received the adulterous woman but He also said “go and sin no more.” They leave that out, don’t they? And the woman at the well, He showed her kindness and compassion but He dealt with her sin and called her to repentance. He dined with scribes and Pharisees, the vilest men of the day, but what does He do? He calls them to openly and publicly repent and shows them the error of their way. The harlot was welcomed by Him but she repented and wept with tears at His feet. The dying thief confessed he was a highway robber on the cross and Jesus saved him and took him to Paradise that day. He fellowshipped with Matthew, the tax collector, but Matthew left his past life in repentance and followed Jesus. And as He looked to the multitudes He said to them, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
