Christ is Plenty

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day”…they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack… – Exodus 16:4a, 18a

While Israel wandered in the wilderness, God sent enough manna from heaven to sustain them every day. This manna is a wonderful picture of Jesus, as He said in John 6:35 that He is the “bread of life.” You know, pastors in modern evangelicalism are under a fierce attack to make people think they need Jesus plus something else – Jesus plus psychology, Jesus plus entertainment, Jesus plus amusement. No, Jesus is plenty! You see, here is a mark of a true preacher: on the one hand you are drawn to him because of the Christ he preaches, yet on the other hand you are weaned from Him because of the Christ he preaches. Do you get that? You are drawn to his preaching because of the Christ he gives you, but also you don’t make him an idol so you are weaned off of him because of the Christ he gives you. You see, the false teacher wants you to depend on him. The product the false preacher produces is only temporarily satisfying, causing you to need him and his ministry more and more. But a true preacher chooses to preach the Christ of plenty. He is but a poor messenger because he knows he must decrease and Christ must increase.

“Pastor, I’m a great sinner!” He has plenty of mercy. “Pastor, I am so needy!” He has plenty of grace. “Pastor, my heart is vile and wicked!” He has plenty of forgiveness. He has plenty today, He will have plenty tomorrow, and He will have plenty next week. He’s got plenty for you next month and next year. He has plenty for you in your young adult years and plenty for you in your middle age years and senior adult years. If you are sad, if you are forsaken of men, if you are desperate, or if you are depressed, He is plenty. Do you have a financial need? He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Do you have health issues? He is the Great Physician. Have you been abandoned? He is your heavenly Father. Do you hunger or thirst? He is the living water and the bread of heaven. He is plenty!

One day, my wife and I were discussing past martyrs of the faith. Do you know what’s amazing about many of them? A lot of them were 16, 17, and 18 years of age and dying for their faith! How did they do that? Because Christ is plenty. And He is all you need too.

Church Work Is Kingdom Work

This gospel is the key to the kingdom – not a man, not a personality, but the gospel. So He is saying that He is going to build His church through His gospel, and His church is His ministry of building His kingdom until He comes again to establish the literal kingdom on the earth.
