Standing in God’s Armor

Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. – Ephesians 6:13

This is a graphic picture in the original language. “Having done everything, to stand” means that after the fight is over, one stands as a victor in the contest. Satan comes against you. He hurls his attack at you. He knows your early years. He knows you are vulnerable to get angry over certain types of things because it brings up old wounds from your past. He knows he can get you jealous or envious because of certain mistreatments or deprivations as a young person. He is crafty. But if you will put on the armor of God, God will give you wisdom. You will recognize Satan’s attack coming, and you will repent in Jesus’ name and tell Satan to get out of your life. You are not going to fall into that jealously, that envy, that bitterness, that hatefulness, and that ugliness. You’ve got to choose to put on the armor of God. It means you stand and remain standing.

When I was a little boy we used to play King of the Hill. And we would fight our way up the hill! But there was a big boy in my neighborhood, and when he got to be king of the hill, he stayed king of the hill. We would wrestle and fight and grab around his legs.  He would just keep throwing us off. He stood and he remained standing. That’s what the Apostle Paul means here. Stand and keep on standing. War and keep on warring. Fight and keep on fighting. You’ve got to stand up and put on the armor of God so you can resist and not yield to Satan.  Resolve by grace not to yield to him. Resist him and he will flee. It is so true – when Satan gives his best shot, he will work through somebody. He doesn’t just come up with his red suit and his red horns and his forked tail. He will work through somebody who will try to provoke you to get in the flesh, get irritated, get angry, get bitter, get jealous, get envious, get mad, get malicious in your heart, and want to fight back and seek revenge.  But I’m telling you, if you will stand and resist him, if you will draw from the grace of God and put on the armor of God, Satan will find out his wiles and craftiness does not work with you. Have you done everything to stand?
