The Spirit Makes Christ Known

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him. – Luke 12:10

The revelation of Christ is the exclusive work of the Spirit of God. Only the Spirit reveals Christ. The Spirit of God is not just roaming around the earth today hoping some clever, creative, charismatic, well-organized personality gets in a pulpit and finds an “effective” way to communicate Jesus Christ. The Spirit is using the 2,000-year-old means that God the Father has ordained to reveal Jesus Christ. If you find a new, clever, or creative way to make Christ known, it is wrong when it diminishes or replaces God’s means.

In Matthew 11:27, Jesus says, “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Men who do not know God cannot come to know Him if they do not know His Son, Jesus Christ. So, if the Spirit of God does not reveal Christ, and Christ does not reveal the Father, men are not saved. It’s just not going to happen.

The revelation of Christ is also the effectual work of the Spirit of God, which means He achieves what He sets out to perform. Only He can make Christ known. Christ is not effectively communicated through a man’s cleverness or creativity, or through all the faddish trends to make Him relevant to people. That is the flesh. Now, a preacher might stir people’s emotions and he might gain a big following, but he’s not going to make dead men into spiritually alive beings that way.

The true effectual means by which men truly come to know Christ and salvation is through the Spirit of God. John 15:26 states, “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me.” So the church of the Lord Jesus Christ has no business employing fallen, fleshly, worldly means to make Jesus attractive to people when the Spirit of God is the only agent that can make Christ known to men!

So, here is Jesus’ point. Why is it that men can blaspheme the Son of God and be forgiven, but if they blaspheme the Spirit of God, they commit the unpardonable sin and can never be forgiven? The reason why is because God has no other means whereby they can come to know Christ but the Spirit of God.

Hypocrisy 101

Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
